Since Snells Shoreline Conservation Community hosted our socially distanced, outdoor training class on trapping, we have sourced traps (donated, loaned, and our own); as well as working with Auckland Council and others to begin a pest control effort at Snells Beach.
In less than three months, we have captured:
Two weasels
41 rats, and
28 other pests (mice mostly, but the occasional hedgehog as well).
This is in addition to other trapping efforts happening by individuals and other groups at Snells Beach.
We plan to slowly expand the trapping in the area, based on a trapping plan established with Auckland Council. Initially focusing on a few critical areas, with a longterm plan to expand to a greater area. If you are interested in joining our project, whether to help check trap lines, donate a trap, or to trap on your property, please email snellsshorelineconservation@gmail.com. At the moment we have access to a limited number of traps but are keen to hear from you.
We would also like to hear from anyone who already has a trap on their property, who would be happy to share their catch statistics and information with us; as it helps us understand where traps are needed and what pests are frequenting various areas to better target the worst pests.
